General Dermatology

Acne is the term for plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and even deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. Acne affects many teenagers and some adults. While not a life threatening condition, acne can lead serious and permanent scarring.

Actinic Keratoses (AKs) are sandpapery rough textured spots that are often located on the face, scalp or hands and develop after years of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. AKs are considered the earliest stage in the development of skin cancer and have the potential to progress to squamous cell carcinoma, a type of non-melanoma skin cancer that can be fatal if neglected.

Aging Skin research shows that there are, in fact, two distinct types of aging. Aging caused by the genes we inherit is called intrinsic (internal) aging. The other type of aging is known as extrinsic (external) aging and is caused by environmental factors, such as exposure to the sun’s rays.

Eczema, or dermatitis, is a general term encompassing skin itching or rashes. A prevalent form in children is atopic dermatitis, estimated to affect up to 20 percent of the population. Dermatitis is often caused by common substances externally contacting and causing inflammation. Eczema can be chronic, but is often overcome by avoidance of skin irritants and allergen patch testing to determine specific triggers.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that affects more than 4.5 million adults in the United States. About one quarter of people with psoriasis develop a related inflammation of the joints. Psoriasis flares can be triggered by infection, increased blood sugar (pre-diabetes), and many oral medications such as blood pressure beta-blockers. Several new therapies called biologic agents are producing substantial improvements in quality of life.

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that causes redness and swelling, primarily on the face and chest, but also may affects the eyes. Symptoms include tendency to flush or blush easily and dry red eyes. The condition can occur over a long period of time and often progresses to a persistent redness, pimples or visible blood vessels.

Skin Cancer develops when skin cells become damaged and the body cannot repair or eliminate them. Skin cancer may be induced by ultraviolet radiation (UV) that is present everywhere all year round. Irreversibly injured cells can multiply and form a tumor often in the outermost visible skin layer. Skin cancers are divided into the typically noninvasive nonmelanoma skin cancers, basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma, and the potentially invasive malignant melanoma.

Aesthetics

Neuromodulators For Frown Lines & Motion Wrinkles Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin Cosmetic® are FDA approved, simple, and nonsurgical treatments that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines. The effects come from a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause frown lines. A few tiny injections start working in a few days and results can last several months.

Soft Tissue Fillers For Facial Volume Loss  replace the normal volume of youthful skin which diminishes as we age. They also soften deeper wrinkles which form at the nose folds and around the mouth. Self harvested fat injections or synthetic filling substances such as soft tissue fillers can be injected into the cheeks, temples and lower face to instantly restore the skin's lost volume. Juvederm®, Voluma®, Vollure®, Volbella®, Restylane®, and Belotero® are made from hyaluronic acid and Radiesse® is made of calcium-based microspheres.

Kybella® (deoxychloic acid) is the only FDA non surgical injection to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fullness), also called "double chin." Kybella permanently destroys fat cells in the treatment area under the chin.  Your treatment will be tailored to your unique chin profile according to how much fullness is beneath your chin and your aesthetic goals. Typically, each session may involve 2-3 vials of Kybella®. Depending on the severity of submental fullness you may need 2-6 sessions 4 weeks apart.

Chemical Peels  help reduce surface lines, smooth roughness, treat discoloration, and clear acne blemishes. The naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) & retinol gently exfoliate revealing healthy, radiant skin. We administer the VI Peel® and the PCA Skin® brands in our office. These treatments are safe for all skin types and are customized to your skin condition.

Microdermabrasion is a
highly effective non-surgical procedure that restores a clear and youthful glow. The treatment is adminstered by using a variety of crystal treatment heads to mechanically slough off dead skin cells.  It also imporves skin tone, texture and discoloration of the skin. For longer and more radiant results, treatment may be combined with mild chemical peels.

Dermaplaning immediately rejuvenates the skin by removing the outermost layer of the dead skin cells and vellus hair or "peach fuzz." It is also highly effective in minimizing the appearace of fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars, while leaving the skin smooth, supple and vibrant. It is also great for prepping the skin prior to chemical peels, enzyme treatments and IPL. This treatment also increases penetration of active ingredients applied post treatment and home care products. It creates the perfect canvas for makeup application and is the go-to treatment to prepare for events. Dermaplaning is a physcial/mechanical exfoliation process which is a controlled scrapping of the skin using a sterile surgical blade held at a 45 degree angle.

SkinPen® Microneedling is a medical grade, FDA approved, state-of-the art microneedling device designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scars on the face and body. It can also be used on stretch marks that are more recent. Microneedling with the SkinPen® delivers thousands of micro-injuries to initiate the body’s wound healing process. The body begins to break down damaged tissue and produce healthy new cells. These cells repair and remodel the injured tissue, producing organized, healthy dermal tissue such as collagen and elastin.

Platelet Rich Plasma can be administered in addition to microneedling. This involves a blood draw the day of the treatment to extract your own human growth factors to enhance the healing process. PRP is a rich liquid gold from your blood which is full of your body’s own growth factors. This will contribute and stimulate healing and regeneration. Once the skin has had its microneedling treatment, your plasma is placed on your skin to enhance the wound healing process for an even more elevated increase of healthy cell/collagen reproduction. This process has been safely administered in thousands of procedures world wide.

Intense Pulsed Light  is an FDA approved method that uses high energy light to heat and remove the redness of rosacea, unwanted pigment from the sun, and stimulate skin tightening & collagen formation.  Multiple treatments are typically recommended depeneding on the severity of the pigmentary concerns.

Laser Vein Removal with the Nd:YAG crystal laser technology provides noninvasive treatments for unsightly veins as well as facial blood vessels. Vascular lasers selectively heat and destroy different sized blood vessels at depths below the skin's surface with excellent results and minimal recovery.

Laser Hair Removal with the LightSheer Diode Laser System uses targeted flashes of light to block the regrowth potential of the hair. The laser energy specifically heats and destroys the hair follicles only, not the surrounding tissue, allowing for the treatment of large areas quickly and effectively.

Resurfacing Laser for Melasma, Acne Scars & Deeper Wrinkles can be targeted with he UltraPulse CO2 laser (Active & DeepFX technology) which delivers thousands of tiny energy pulses in a fractionated pattern over the skin. Each laser pulse heats a column of tissue to eliminate excess pigmentation, refine texture and stimulate collagen growth and remodeling to smooth skin. The fractional pattern leaves small bridges of untouched skin to speed the healing process and minimize treatment risks.

Radiotherapy

Superficial Radiotherapy (SRT) For Keloid Scars & Non Melanoma Skin Cancer (Basal and Squamous Cell Type)  the SRT-100 device uses low energy superficial radiotherapy (SRT) that penetrates no deeper than the thickness of the skin. Superficial X-ray is a noninvasive therapy for hyperactive itchy and painful keloids scars post surgery and also is an alternative therapy for surgical removal for some types of skin cancer. With SRT, there are no needles needed, scarring is minimal, healing time is fast and risk of infection and recurring lesions is very low. Superficial radiotherapy has been used for over 50 years, but recently the SRT-100 device allows for a nonsurgical treatment option in the private office setting.

Keloid Scar Superficial Radiotherapy the keloid scar is a common hyperactive scar type that can be painful, itchy and disfiguring. Keloids can come after acne, skin piercing, surgery scars, and any skin trauma. Steroid injections and surgical removal of keloids are plagued by the keloid lesion often recurring. Two to three superficial X-ray therapy treatments are performed for keloids, starting the day of the surgical keloid removal. SRT is highly effective at preventlng the keloid from reforming post removal without the need for repeated painful steroid injections, keloid compression garments, or skin pressure dressings.

Skin Cancer (Basal and Squamous Cell Carcinoma) Superficial Radiotherapy the non melanoma skin cancers are epidemic in the USA and rates are increasing each year especially in people age 60 years and older. Superficial X-ray eliminates basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinomas in a virtually painless manner with highly effective cure rates. Mohs micrographic surgery is another very successful treatment option, but SRT allows for skin cancer removal without needles, scalpel, and sutures. The Superficial X-ray therapies are split up two to three treatments a week for approximately twelve total fractions. Most patients see skin irritation (redness, scaling) about two weeks after starting therapy and this redness peaks at about four to six weeks. After the X-ray treatments the skin appears pink and then fades to be normal skin color or slightly lighter in about three to six months. After the superficial radiotherapy, the remaining scar is only a few millimeters larger around the original skin cancer.
